The IVF Process – a Step by Step Guide

The IVF Process – a Step by Step Guide

IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is an assisted reproductive technology used to help parents who are unable to conceive naturally. The treatment involves a combination of medication and minimally invasive surgical procedures to enable the fertilization of the egg and implant the embryo in the uterus. It is a safe and commonly used procedure to induce pregnancy. Let us understand the key reasons that one chooses in-vitro fertilization and what to expect during the entire treatment cycle.

Reasons to opt for In Vitro Fertilization

In vitro Fertilization is a popular and reliable method to get pregnant. This is recommended in case the conditions are unfavourable for natural conception. Some of the common reasons to opt for IVF are listed below.

  • Reduced fertility in women over a certain age – This is usually 40 and above.
  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes This prevents the embryo from reaching the uterus
  • Reduced ovarian function Causing lower frequency or absence of ovulation in the female
  • Endometriosis It affects the uterus and ovaries due to uterine tissues growing outside of the uterus
  • Uterine fibroids The presence of fibroids inside the uterus, making it difficult for the fertilized eggs to be implanted.
  • Infertility issues in the male such as low sperm count, sperm mobility rate, or other sperm-related abnormalities.
  • Unexplained infertility issues in either of the partner

5 Steps of the IVF Treatment

There are 5 main steps involved in the IVF treatment.

  1. Stimulation: The IVF process requires multiple eggs to increase the chances of developing a viable embryo. Fertility drugs are given to the female to increase the production of eggs and the egg count is regularly monitored to ascertain the ideal time for extraction.
  2. Egg retrieval: This is a minor surgical procedure known as follicular aspiration, to extract the eggs from ovaries.
  3. Insemination: The male is required to give a specimen of his sperm, which is then used to fertilize the eggs under favorable conditions to produce embryos.
  4. Embryo culture: The fertilized eggs are monitored to ensure proper growth and may be tested for genetic conditions.
  5. Transfer: When the embryos are ready, which is usually within 2-5 days of fertilization, they are implanted in the uterus through a thin tube called a catheter.

In Vitro Fertilization is common and effective infertility treatment. Women who are past their reproductive years, have fertility issues, have infertile male partners, or have reached menopause can get pregnant with the help of In vitro Fertilization. In addition, parents who have a genetic disorder can avoid passing it on to their offspring by opting for in vitro fertilization. The IVF cost is between USD 3000 – USD 5000.
